Cucumber Honey Hair Marinade

I think many natural hair girls can relate to this story.... read tons of reviews of a particular hair product and the majority agree that this is the new "Holy Grail." You research the ingredients and love what you see, natural, provides slip, affordable, AND its at my local Target, well that's all you had to say because now I'm grabbing my purse and heading to buy the answers to all my problems. You get home itching to try this shiny new product, you even follow exactly how the lady from the Youtube channel used it on her hair and then, bam...nothing happens, no slip, no tangles "melting", no fireworks, no triumphant background music, nada! You can't back track now so you just proceed through the rest of the wash day. So now you can either get your money back or try to give the product what it's missing.

This is what happened to me when I bought YES to Cucumbers conditioner. In fact I've had it since 2013 and didn't revisit it until July of this year when I ran out of my regular conditioner. The problem with the YTC conditioner is that it doesnt detangle or have the moisture I was looking for and with my hair texture that is a huge factor! But what I did have on hand were ingredients that could add slip and moisturize. I call this my Cucumber Honey Hair Marinade... because marinade makes it sound even more pampering ;)

The following recipe was enough for the length of my hair, I suggest cutting it in half or doubling it depending on your length.

5 TBSP YES to Cucumber
4TBSP aloe vera juice [I used the Vitamin Shoppe brand]
3 TBSP Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 TBSP raw honey
1 TBSP virgin unrefined coconut oil

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and apply after shampooing hair, leave on for 30 minutes with a plastic cap and towel or under a dryer. Rinse out, dry your hair, and style as usual.

This is my hair before I washed it, I had just taken out a 2 day old twist set.

I was definitely happy with the results, it was not too oily or runny but the oils made detangling easier while the aloe vera juice gave my curls more definition. As for the honey, it boosted my conditioner to the next level by softening my hair. I also love the fresh smell of cucumbers but honey definitely added a nice subtle scent.

Feel free to try this recipe and let me know how it worked for you!
